What is Multimodal AI?
Multimodal AI describes models that understand or produce more than one type of content — text, images, audio, and video together.
A multimodal model can take a screenshot, a PDF, a voice note, or a video clip as input and reason about it alongside text, and often generate more than one type of output too. In everyday use this is what lets you photograph a whiteboard and get structured notes, drop in a chart and ask what the trend means, or describe a scene and receive a video. Multimodality removes the copy-paste step that used to sit between tools, which is why it changed workflows in design, support, and research faster than raw text quality did. When comparing tools, check which modalities are truly native versus bolted on: some products convert your image to text with OCR before the model ever sees it, which loses layout, colour, and diagram meaning. Also check file size limits, page limits, and whether image or audio input is priced differently. For visual work, generation quality still varies far more between tools than text quality does.
