What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is any AI that creates new content — text, images, audio, video, or code — rather than only analysing existing data.
Generative AI is the umbrella term for models that produce something new instead of only sorting, scoring, or predicting from existing data. It spans text generation, image generation, speech and music, video, and code, and it is the reason AI moved from a back-office analytics topic to something every marketer, designer, and developer touches weekly. The common pattern across all of it is the same: describe what you want, get a first draft in seconds, then edit. That shifts human effort from creation to direction and quality control, which is where the real skill now sits. The limitations are also shared across modalities — output can be confidently wrong, style can drift toward the generic, and rights over training data and generated work remain contested in several jurisdictions. For commercial use, check each tool's indemnity and licensing terms, keep a human review step for anything published, and compare tools on editing control and consistency, not just the quality of a single flashy demo output.
