Can I convert a scanned PDF to PDF/A?

Yes. Scans convert fine — images are re-embedded with an appropriate colour profile. For fully searchable archival records, run OCR first (via our PDF to Word tool) and then convert the OCR'd PDF to PDF/A.

What is the difference between PDF/A-1, PDF/A-2, and PDF/A-3?

PDF/A-1 is the strictest (based on PDF 1.4, no transparency or layers). PDF/A-2 adds JPEG 2000, transparency, and layers. PDF/A-3 additionally allows arbitrary file attachments — used for e-invoicing formats like ZUGFeRD. For most compliance needs, PDF/A-2b is the right pick.

Does PDF/A conversion preserve digital signatures?

Yes when the source signature uses features allowed in the target PDF/A level. If a signature relies on features PDF/A disallows (rare), you'll need to re-sign after conversion.

Will links in my PDF still work?

Internal links (to other pages in the same document) are preserved. External hyperlinks are preserved in PDF/A-2 and PDF/A-3 but disallowed in PDF/A-1. External media (audio, video, JavaScript) is always removed.

How large can my file be?
