What is Freemium?
Freemium is a pricing model offering a permanently free tier with limits, with paid plans unlocking capacity or advanced features.
Freemium means the product is free forever at some level, unlike a free trial that expires. For AI tools the free tier is usually capped by usage — daily credits, monthly generations, a message limit, or access to a weaker model — because every request costs the vendor real compute. That makes the shape of the limit more important than its existence. A generous cap on a weak model may be useless, while a small daily allowance on a frontier model can cover a solo user completely. Watch for the details that decide real value: whether outputs are watermarked, whether commercial use is permitted, whether files or history are deleted, whether your data trains the vendor's models, and whether the free tier includes export. Also check the first paid step, since many products jump from free to a price aimed at teams. For comparison purposes, treat a free tier as a test environment first and a permanent solution only after you have hit its limits deliberately.
